Since all this talk about new demigods, I thought I kick an idea about for an expansion - Referee gods.

Such gods would be NPC's and represent a third team.  They could provide balance, where needed and since they act entirely for their own amusements, what they do would represent a bit of randomness, hence making an otherwise unwinable game, winable.

I don't see how this would work on current maps, so new maps would probably be needed.

Thoughts?

One winning factor about Demigod is that it has a lot of depth and takes a lot of skill to master. Adding in luck and pretty much screwing skill over would definitely not be in the best interest of the developers.

They would NEVER ruin an RTS by adding such a luck system. Its just not good for the genre, sorry

Luck is one of the reason Mario kart Wii annoys me.

GOOD IDEA

"Rubber-band" AI almost never works out to be a fun gameplay element for competitive gameplay.

Truely random elements can be an awesome boon to a game... see Roguelikes and the diablo games for great use of random seeds in games.

But when it comes to things that directly affect competition... randomness just feels cheap. Are we playing a video game or are we playing craps?

Random elements in a rts fall apart.  Anyone play 7th legion?  Was an rts with a card system that just fell apart after 6 minutes into the game.

This, I hope. If it is random, it is bad for gameplay. I have yet to see an exception.

Okay, I can see that only serious (read as not-fun) people that needs the stress of competitive play with lightening fast reflexes, constantly analyzing the situation, making strategic choices, etc.  I guess I just wanna have a little fun, to balance the day.

Of course, c'mon - for COMPETITIVE play it wouldn't be there, just like having a NO FAVOR ITEMS for truly competitive play.

Think of it as a "Finger of God" gone wild.   If you are visualizing OP gods killing demigods, then you haven't grokked it yet.  Maybe like a big throne, where under-powered players can make plea - particularly when they are getting WIPED CLEAN.  Of course, there wouldn't be any guarrantees, but it might result in the under-powered players being able to make at least one push - and I would think a little more exciting for the players are doing the WIPING - now they have to respond to an unexpected situation and try to quickly gain the initiative again.

Okay, so with those words, I back down from the majority, most don't seem to like it.

I'm not sure it's such a bad idea, black

An equal third team - as in instead of team 1 v team 2 (as Demigod currently is), it's team 1 v team 2 v team 3 - does sound interesting to me.
